“Human agency vs. AI agency: User privacy management on algorithmic social media”
As social media platforms increasingly rely on AI-driven algorithms, users face new forms of privacy invasion that challenge their sense of agency and control. This talk presents an integrated research project examining how users perceive, experience, and manage privacy in algorithmic environments.
The first study extends foundational privacy concepts and self-determination theory to human–algorithm interaction, revealing that perceived violations stem from unmet needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Building on this conceptual groundwork, the second study uses qualitative interviews to explore users’ emotional responses (e.g., annoyance, fear, and helplessness) to privacy-invasive algorithmic content, linking these emotions to distinct coping strategies that range from direct privacy protection to avoidance and disengagement. Lastly, a cross-national survey identifies distinct privacy management profiles and demonstrates that privacy self-efficacy is a key predictor of user strategies across cultures.
Together, these studies provide a holistic understanding of how users negotiate privacy with opaque algorithmic systems and highlight pathways toward more transparent, respectful, and empowering digital environments.
